Storytelling

Considering there is a story everywhere we look in life, we are faced with an equal amount of opportunities to tell a story. I look for places to learn and tell stories in every aspect of my life. Some true and meant to inspire, others may be fantasy but could still inspire or provide entertainment. This page is an holds examples of places I practice storytelling.

Script writing

One of the places my storytelling is utilized may sound a bit on the nose, but my experience in theatre and specifically writing scripts has been invaluable as a storyteller. They have helped me hone my abilities to convey complex ideas and storylines in short amounts of time.

Photography

Something I fell in love with about photography is its ability to convey more than just what is shown in the image. The interpretation that can come out of it can lead to some of the finest stories that point to amazing moments in time.

Social Media posts

I have had the distinct pleasure of most of my work experience being with social media accounts that allow for me to tell stories of those who most influenced what we work with. From looking at African American Pioneers of the arts to female pioneers of the arts, I have been able to literally tell stories that changed the world.

Dungeons & Dragons

This one admittedly takes a bit of explaining.

If you aren't familiar with the game 'Dungeons & Dragons', it is a multi player table top role playing game. Each player makes a character and are led through a fantasy setting on a large scale quest known as a campaign. They are led by a narrator who comes up with the story and controls all of the non player characters. This role is known as a Game Master.

That is typically my job.

It is the job of the Game Master to not only write a compelling story that encourages the players to travel and explore the fictional world that they are playing in, and at the same time make sure that the backstories and character development of each of the player characters is something that fits into this world while still retaining their own individual merits.

All of this is great, but perhaps my favourite thing about this job is working with the choices of the players. As the players retain free will in this world, they can make whatever choice they want and there will be an effect that comes from that choice. Good or bad. What this allows for is a style of collaborative storytelling that takes the concept of 'Yes, and!' brainstorming to the next level. It is the actions of the players and the Game Master together that make this work and make it a remarkable experience.

Fiction Writing

Writing has been a long time hobby of mine. From a young age, I was always the kid who needed a page limit maximum on their creative writing projects.

My recent fiction project was a worldbuilding challenge given to me by some of my close friends. While the project remained as a simple fun hobby for whenever I was waiting for emails at work, it eventually grew to be a 40,000 word novella. Give it a read! I hope you enjoy!
