Public Relations and Advertising Aide to the Harding University Pied Pipers

The Pied Pipers were a huge part of my time in college. We would travel all over the country and even to Scotland to perform improvisational theatre for children in pre-school up to 6th grade. I was fortunate enough to have been a member from when I showed up as a freshman till when I graduated as a second year senior. Five years in total, two of those were also spent as an administrative aide providing anything from show announcements to COVID-19 updates.

During this time, we did not have much of a plan other than to keep those interested in Piper shows knowledgeable about when and where our shows were happening. This was paramount as our organization was largely run on donations that came from people seeing our shows and then asking us to come to their school. Even this plan, simple as it was, would be wrecked as that spring would bring the first wave of COVID-19 and keep my college from meeting in person. This would keep Pied Piper shows from happening for almost a full year. During that time, we needed to keep our audience interested in the Pied Pipers without having shows. So we recorded ourselves doing stories and songs and posted those instead while dealing with the emergency posts dealing with the ever changing nature of the pandemic.

Show Schedule

As we are a theatre troupe who depends on audience engagement and participation, our first order of business was to let people know early on about the entire schedule for the year to allow our audience to plan to be with us. Graphic created by me with VERY limited resources.

Fall Tour: Oklahoma

We take one tour each semester. This was the fall of 2019 and we had a full week of 18 shows over five days. This post was specifically for the purpose of giving our network in Oklahoma something to share with their friends who may not know the Pied Pipers yet.

"Due to concerns about COVID-19, Harding University has decided to ask students to remain home instead of coming back from spring break. On Monday, the 16th of March, students will begin online coursework delivery until further notice.

As for what this means for the Pied Pipers, our next shows are our local tour on March 31st and the Spring Sing show the morning of April 11th. As of now, we are remaining optimistic about classes starting up soon and being able to return to campus in time to prepare for these shows for completely healthy children! We will continue to monitor the situation and update this page as soon as we know more about how we will proceed with these show dates and any other events in the future. In the meantime: Stay well, wash your hands, and know you're loved"

COVID-19

As was the case for just about everyone, COVID-19 shutdowns threw a wrench into even the best laid plans. Personally, I was able to benefit even if slightly as it gave me experience dealing with writing to stay on top of a constantly changing situation that directly affected us and our audience.

COVID-19 Updates

“Due to the persisting nature of the COVID-19 situation and Harding deciding to suspend on campus activities for the remainder of the semester, we are officially announcing the cancellation of our Spring Sing show (11th of April) and subsequent Summer tour in the Tampa Florida area (9th-18th of May). We are greatly saddened by the fact that we will not be able to love on so many of you in person, but we promise you that you are in our thoughts and prayers all the time. Thank you for the wonderful time we had this year, and we cannot wait to be with you all again in the fall! Wash your hands, and know that you are so loved!!”

“Update: at this point, we see it fit to go ahead and call off our tour day on the 31st of March. We will severely miss getting to be with you, and we pray that this all ends soon! In the meantime: wash your hands and know you're loved!!”

As the pandemic continued, it took us a long time to make finalized decisions regarding if we would be allowed back on campus and what that would look like for the Pied Pipers. These were the updates I was asked to compose.

Alternate Post

Posts in a time with no shows

We would not have an in-person show till the spring of 2021. As our social media was primarily for letting people know about when and where we will be having shows, we needed to figure out an alternate use as we were not having shows. What we came up with were a series of posts that used some of our one-sided stories and songs. We would video them and then post them with instructions on how the kids could follow along.

The copy of one of these posts is in the box to the left and the facebook logo will take you to one of the videos.
